SAOSO has partnered with the Climate Neutral Group in the launch of their AgriCarbon Programme to ensure that organic farmers benefit from South Africa’s first verified carbon programme which pays farmers for the carbon credits they generate from their sustainable land management practices.
This programme actively encourages farmers to rebuild soils, improve their yields and reap rewards.
What is the AgriCarbon Programme?
The AgriCarbon Programme is South Africa’s first carbon programme paying farmers for the carbon credits they generate from their sustainable land management practices.
Rotational grazing, cover cropping, reduced tillage, and other practices improve soil quality and the farmer’s bottom line. Through the AgriCarbon Programme, increased soil organic carbon and reduced greenhouse gas emissions from these practices can also generate carbon credits of the highest quality. These credits are purchased by companies in South Africa and abroad looking to offset their carbon footprint.
Does the AgriCarbon Programme fit your farm?
If you are currently, or thinking of, carrying out any of the following practices on your farm, then the AgriCarbon Programme may be a great fit:
- Reduced application of fertiliser
- Water management (reduced irrigation)
- Improved irrigation management (energy efficiency)
- Reduced soil disturbance (tillage)
- Crop residue retention
- Rotation of crops
- Cover cropping
- Relay/double/inter- cropping
- Rotational/adaptive/multi-species grazing
- Residue grazing
